How Can a Dentist Manage Sleep Apnoea?

Woman covering her ears with a pillow while man snoresSome types of snoring and sleep apnoea are caused by the soft tissue anatomy at the back of the mouth and upper airway. When you sleep, the relaxed position of your jaws can allow the airway to seal off, blocking air flow.

Dental sleep medicine aims to correct such conditions through non-invasive oral appliances that reposition the jaws in a way that enlarges the airway naturally. Such sleep mouthpieces can only be fitted by a trained dentist and under the partnership with your sleep physician or pulmonologist.

  • Diagnosis Process: The stage of your sleep apnoea can be evaluated using many different methods such as Episworth Sleepiness Scale & Berlin sleep questionnaires, computerised CBCT scans or by physical examination of your jaw, palate, tongue, tonsils, uvula, neck and throat. An initial consultation with one of our dentist will allow us to determine the best diagnostic plan for your individual needs. After your initial consultation appointment usually we will refer you for a ENT Examination and Sleep Study evaluation to confirm our diagnosis and create your tailor treatment plan.
  • Treatment and Management: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy was considered the best treatment for adults with severe sleep apnoea. However patient often find CPAP machines noisy, bulky and invasive resulting in poor compliance. Now patients who have been diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnoea can be treated with conservative oral appliance therapy. A custom, adjustable appliance is constructed which will position the jaw in an optimal position to open the airway for a comfortable nights sleep. In some cases additional treatment may involve behavioural therapy, myofunctional therapy, weight loss, medications, sleep hygiene, nutrition and supplementation.
