What are dental implants?

Dental implants are made from titanium and are inserted into the jawbone acting as to support a replacement tooth. Once the area is healed a tooth can be fixed to the implant allowing it to act as if it was one of your natural teeth. If you are missing more then 1 tooth, find out your option for replacing multiple teeth using dental implants.

What’s involved with replacing a single missing tooth?

Step 1: First we need to ensure you have enough bone to support your dental implant, to do this we will send you to get a CBCT X-ray of the area.

Step 2: Once we have reviewed your CBCT X-ray, we will take a 3D scan of your entire mouth using our TRIOS 3D scanner. By having a digital scan of your mouth, we can ensure we take precise image of your teeth and you get to avoid having those annoying impression!

Step 3: We will send off all your X-rays and 3D Scans to our lab who will plan your implant placement ensuring we avoid nerves within the jaw, your sinus’s and accurately plan that it will be placed in the exact position in your jawbone.

Step 4: We place the dental implant into your jawbone using a form of keyhole surgery requiring no incisions or suture. The implant will be covered over with a connector allowing the gums to heal and prepare for a tooth to be fixed. We then wait 3 months for the bone to grow around the implant and harden this is called osteointegration

Step 5: After 3 months, the final 2 stage, we take another 3D scan of the implant connectors and place the final crown your implant.

What if I don’t have enough bone?

As dental implants required adequate bone around them, to ensure you have enough bone, we will assess the bone levels quite thoroughly on the initial CBCT X-ray. Sometimes the bone structure is too thin to support a dental implant and a bone graft is required. Learn more about bone grafting.

How long will the whole implant process take from start to finish?

The total time from start to finish can take between 4-6 months depending on the complexity of your implant procedure.

Will I have gaps where my teeth have been removed?

No, if you are missing front teeth, we will make temporary teeth for you to wear until the implants are completed. However, generally if you are missing a back tooth, we do not place a temporary tooth while going through the implant process.
